Design Lives Here 2019

Over the last nine years, WQED has engaged close to 2,000 middle school students through its Design Lives Here program, a semester-long engineering initiative aimed at encouraging area kids to learn about and consider the value of a profession in engineering.

The program culminates in “Invention Convention”, a two-day event that includes hands- and minds-on engineering challenges and the opportunity to consult with professional engineers.

This year, Daedalus returned to the event, with engineers and designers volunteering as mentors in the various challenges, which included building an air-propelled rocket, a powered by a rubber band, and a roller coaster for a marble.

Our team also interacted with the kids at the Daedalus Design Hub, which gave the students a chance to ask about some of the devices we have created. The SKC Air Sampling was a hit with the kids, as was the Continuous Mining Machine Remote Control we designed for Joy / Komatsu Mining.
