RFID Surgical Wand

A Good Design award winner, this RFID surgical wand uniquely identifies surgical sponges by means of an embedded RFID chip. It is a portable, efficient, cost-effective way to detect and track items used in surgical procedures. The wand helps protect both patients and doctors by enabling quick and easy detection of RFID-tagged items before during and after invasive procedures, reducing the possibility of retained or lost materials.

Our industrial design team ergonomically optimized the wand for one-handed use and ease of manufacture and assembly. At various stages of the development, lead users were identified and interviewed with weighted, full-scale concept models. The ultimate design incorporates both human factors standards and user input regarding weight, size, hand angles, and grip configurations.
