ADB SAFEGATE, a global leader in integrated solutions for airports, airlines, and Airport Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), saw an opportunity to update their elevated approach lighting product lines, reduce manufacturing, installation, and maintenance costs, and ease configuration for specific customer applications. To simplify and modernize their product line, ADB SAFEGATE partnered with Daedalus, leveraging the firm’s experience in research, industrial design, and engineering.
In addition to replacing traditional halogen and existing LED light sources with advanced LEDs (visible spectrum or infrared), the new product line would support advanced capabilities like heating, video, infrared, and both wired and wireless (4G/5G) communications. Daedalus worked to create a cohesive product line that advanced ADB SAFEGATE’s brand language and seamlessly integrated into their customers’ existing runway power infrastructure. We began with in-depth discussions with internal teams and ADB SAFEGATE stakeholders. We analyzed competing products and identified key objectives, which informed a wide range of initial design concepts. We started with sketches but quickly moved to 3D data models that incorporated a variety of functional components. These concepts were refined with attention to modularity, manufacturability, sustainability, and ease of maintenance. Daedalus worked closely with ADB SAFEGATE’s team, developing several standout design concepts for feedback. After iterative testing and adjustments, we finalized a design that met and exceeded both functional and aesthetic goals. The collaboration led to the highly modular AXON and AXON EQ elevated lighting product lines. Both the AXON and AXON EQ product lines replace traditional halogen and existing LED lighting sources with more reliable and efficient high-intensity LEDs and are available and configured for approach, threshold, stop bar, and runway applications in all climates. The AXON EQ line also adds a suite of sensing offerings and wireless communications.
